万圣节的南瓜灯为啥叫“Jack”？原来跟这个人有关系！
今天是11月1日,西方的“万圣节”。在万圣节， 南瓜灯是必不可少的元素，除了化装舞会以外，雕刻南瓜灯也是一项保留节目。
那么你知道万圣节为什么要做南瓜灯吗？

早期的凯尔特人仪式
把圆形水果或蔬菜雕琢成人脸形状的习俗可以追溯到几千年前的北欧凯尔特人文化。
爱尔兰移民博物馆(EPIC the Irish migration Museum)的高级馆长Nathan Mannion表示:“这一习俗最早的起源甚至可以追溯到前基督教时代，由凯尔特人的头颅崇拜演变而来，被雕琢的瓜果甚至可能代表了从敌人那里掠夺来的战利品，这种联系可能是代表着你的敌人头颅被砍下，确实有些血腥。”
把水果蔬菜雕琢成人脸形状的习俗在凯尔特人的萨温节有了更深刻的意义。
萨温节是凯尔特人的传统节日，于每年11月1日举办，现代万圣节沿袭了许多萨温节的传统。在10月31日的萨温节前夜，人们认为死者的灵魂会混在人群中。
为了避开那些不安分的死灵，人们穿上恐怖，在块根类蔬菜上刻上吓人的面孔，如甜菜、土豆和萝卜，毕竟正好是这些蔬菜丰收的时节。这也是万圣节前夜人们化妆活动的前身。

Jack-o'-lantern
南瓜灯的英文为 Jack-o'-lantern 或 Jack O' Lantern。
有人肯定会问，为啥南瓜灯叫“Jack”？
韦氏词典和大英百科全书都说Jack -o’-lantern这个词”来自一个非常古老的爱尔兰故事，讲的是关于一个名叫Stingy Jack的人。
As the story goes, he tricked the Devil to get money. When Jack died, God refused to let him go to heaven.
据说，他骗了魔鬼得到了钱。杰克死后，上帝拒绝让他去天堂。
And the Devil, still angry about being tricked, did not allow Jack to go to hell either. So, Jack's punishment was to wander the earth forever.
魔鬼还在为自己被骗而生气，也不让杰克下地狱。所以，杰克的惩罚是永远在人间流浪。
His soul was stuck. And like most spirits trapped on Earth, he probably spent most of his time trying to frighten humans.

To protect themselves and frighten away Jack's wandering soul, people in Ireland would carve scary faces on turnips.

When Irish families moved to the United States, they brought this tradition with them. These immigrants began carving jack-o'-lanterns from pumpkins, which were more common than turnips in their new home.

But the name Jack has been a general term for a boy since the 1500s and for this reason, it found its way into many childhood songs and rhymes.

For this reason, the British can also claim ownership to one of the original uses of the phrase jack-o’-lantern.

In the 17th century, the term referred to a night watchman, a man who literally carried a lantern.
在17世纪，这个词指的是守夜人，也就是提着灯笼的人。
